In my company I have a LAn that is implemented AD as the Root
Now the company have built a branch office that will be linked with the main office with a VPN link
What kind of AD do I have to install on this branch office ? A child domain (like: office2.domain_name.com.) or a AD replica of the same domaisn (domain_name.com)

Thanks,

I would suggest neither. Set it up as a site.

But using sites, what kind of beneficts will I have, instead of create a new AD

Using a new AD, logon time won't decrease

Ricardo,

You might want to consider setting up Sites in the Active Directory Sites
and Services MMC. By setting up Sites you are better able to control Active
Directory replication over the WAN and you are able to assist user logons
( assuming that you place a DC in the second Site ).

If you have good wan links I would use sites, if the links are slow or
unreliable I would create a child-domain.

For one you will have less administrative duties due to the fact that you
only have one domain. More domains = more work.

Actually you don't need a DC in the branch, but again that depends on the
wan links etc... But if you want/can have a DC at the branch I usually
install the server as a member first, then use dcpromo to make it a DC.
During the dcpromo process you select "additional DC in an existing domain"
and type your domain name.

If you don't want to do the initial replication over your wan, that is if
you have w2k3, you can install it from media.
