Ad-aware question

D

Dr. Indera

hello,

i scanned my laptop with ad-aware and this came up. as i was copying this
text, i closed ad-aware by mistake.
i will re-run the software, but wanted to know if this is something that i
should keep or delete.
i think this is the setting i have for when ie opens. i have it open to a
blank page, but this message may be saying something else.

thank you.

I don't know whether this answers your question but... you can delete
*everything* when using Ad-aware (Lavasoft.) No problem.

It appears that your home page is set to "about:blank", which is nothing
more than a blank site. I don't see why it should be "blacklisted". Internet
Explorer itself provides a button, "Use Blank", to set your home page to
"about:blank".

Ad-aware can be misleading. It classifies ALL cookies as "data miners". I
suppose the part of memory where Windows stores our logon information is
also a "data miner"??

It sounds like you have the "about:blank" trojan which seems to be rife at the moment. Run ad-aware and allow it to delete things.
Try setting your home page to something specific (google, yahoo etc) and see what happens. If the home page gets reset every time you open IE then you definitely have a trojan. If this still happens after running as-aware then download CWShredder here...its free and its a great program.

hope this helps. :)

I disagree. Ad-aware is too suspicious of cookies (they do have legitimate
uses) and there may be other things wrong with it.

Even if it does find things that you should delete, you should find out how
you got them in the first place.

ad-aware mis-identifies your home page (about:blank) as a 'possible' broswer
hijack, it's not. the reason for this is that many programs that contain
adware DO hijack the about:blank start page because it's an easy target.
for now, you can ignore it or simply right-click on the warning in ad-aware
and choose 'ignore this in the future' (or whatever the context menu says, i
don't recall at the moment).

an alternative would be to create your own 'blank.htm' page (you can use
outlook express in html mode if that's easier for you), and then save it in
a directory of your choosing. launch the new page in your browser and then
Tools, Internet Options menu IE, press the Use Current button. your new
homepage will be whatever you created in OE. in my case, i merely created a
blank page in OE called, 'black.htm' and changed the background colour to
black, then saved and loaded it into IE, and made it the default home page.
that way, i can tell at a glance that my homepage hasn't been hijacked and
ad-aware doesn't mistakenly identify it as a possible browser hijack either.

That one is in a sense an error, if seen on its own. It is the normal
registry entry if you set the Home Page to 'Blank' (about:blank), but
it is also associated with some Hijack ware. One way is to tell AdAware
to ignore the one entry and expect to see others if the hijacker comes
along, the other is to edit the setting in Internet Options manually to
about:mozilla
