AD Authentication Issue

I have 2 servers that have AD running. If 1 server is down for maintenance
the other server does not immediately authenticate user workstation logins
to the network?

The server that is still running is the primary? Is there anything basic I
can check to be sure this is the case and the 2 servers AD's are talking to
each other?
Thanks in Advance

AD computers find the domain by DNS. I would suspect that your server 1 is
the DNS server all your AD clients point to for the Primary DNS. If you
don't, you should set up DNS on your second DC and input that IP address as
the alternate DNS server on the AD clients.

I have seen posts that this in this config, if the first DNS server is down
it will use the "alternate" DNS server listed.

Personally this is something I have not seen Win 2k3 do. I've always had to
manually set the Alternate DNS server as the primary DNS server on the
clients before it will work.
