Acute networking issue

I've had a home network with 4 computers for a long time now (1.5 years) and
I've had minimal problems; I've hit small issues here and there, but nothing
I couldn't fix. But something just happened that I'm really in the dark about.

I came home to update my iPod; just add a few new songs, nothing special. My
connection was working just fine, with no problems observed. In the midst of
renaming some files and updating my iPod's firmware, I suddenly lost
connection to the internet. I went through basic troubleshooting; repairing
connection, restarting computer, etc. I tried to disable the connection, but
I get an error message that I'd never ever gotten before: "It is not possible
to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or
more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been
initiated by another user or the system account."

The connection icon on my taskbar shows a healthy connection, but I can't
even ping my router with command prompt. Strangely enough, I can ping other
computers on the network that go through the router, but I can't ping the
router. I can't use Internet Explorer to navigate to the router, either. I
can, however, share files over the network with other computers, but I can't
get through the router to anywhere else.

I've looked at my connection settings and everything looks to be in order,
but the router and my computer are in some sort of fight right now. Anyone
have any suggestions as to what I can do?

did you reboot after the iPod update?
can you try a restore point from a day before this happened?

Thanks for the response, Barb.

Yes, I rebooted after the iPod update, and the same thing happened. I didn't
want to go back to a restore date, so I wanted to try a couple of other
things first.

I tried an old router I had laying around, and it seemed to solve the
problem just fine. Then, just for kicks, I placed the original router back to
see if something was bugging out. Lo and behold, problem solved. I'd tried
rebooting the router and modem yesterday as one of the potential remedies and
it didn't work. For some reason, the connection with a different router
seemed to solve the problem. =\

glad it is resolved.

More likely your usual router needed to be powered down for a few
minutes rather than just rebooted in order to correct matters.
