Actvation Question: Why Did This Work???

A

Arthur Shapiro

About a month ago, my primary desktop (XP Pro) machine failed - it was most
likely the bulging capacitor issue that has affected/afflicted a lot of
boards, with my brand (EpOX) particularly hard hit.

I moved over to my secondary desktop machine, an old Soyo 1.2 gig machine,
while I figured out what to do. Three days later, its motherboard failed.
Talk about a run of bad luck.

EpOX agreed to take the board back for repair, even though it was out of
warranty. Meanwhile I borrowed an old barebones 400 Mhz. Gateway box from a
friend's garage, and put my main machine's hard drive into it. As expected,
XP wouldn't boot up - the hardware was too incompatible. I did a fresh
install of XP into one of the partitions. Needless to say, XP started to nag
about activation, but at least I had 30 days to hope that the repaired EpOX
board wold get back.

As the days dwindled down, the actication warnings became more frequent and
intense. Finally, Tuesday, when I was down to six days left before mandatory
actication, and with no contact from EpOX, I bit the bullet and activated.
Hoping to reach a human, I tried phone actication, but I only reached a
voice-reponse unit and the activation proceeded normally.

That was Tuesday. You can guess what showed up in the mail Wednesday!

So I re-built up my main machine. Of course, the "new" version of XP wouldn't
boot up, so I directed it to the original XP installation. Up it came, but it
reported significant hardware changes (probably due to the failed attempt to
use it on the Gateway box) and gave me three days to activate.

So I told it to go ahead, knowing it would fail due to having just activated
that XP the day before on a completely different machine.

To my absolute astonishment, it activated without complaint. I'm up and
running, typing this message.

Can anyone tell me why?

Sometimes you just get lucky. I suppose that for every time WPA messes
someone up, there are other people who get a pass.

And that is totally unexceptable. PA shouldn't screw up for people at
all.

I don't think I'll be holding my breath for that.

I just hope whatever scheme they come up with for Vista is better, but I'm
not hopeful on that account, either. I also wonder if they gained enough
happy users to justify the cost of the whole activation mechanism.

Doubtful.
