ActiveX control

Wilfred

For years, I have used the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary
(http://www.m-w.com/) to look up pronunciations. It contains links to a
program that plays a WAV file with the correct pronunciation of English
words. After using this feature for years without any issues, I now get a
pop-up window that requires me to click OK before the WAV file is played.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

i Click to run ActiveX control on this webpage

OK

I have added the site to the pop-up blocker and to the trusted sites in
Internet Options/Security. No luck in eliminating this annoying pop-up!

Any suggestions?

BTW, I am using:
Windows Professional (Version 5.1 Service Pack 2)
Microsoft Windows Live OneCare (internet security suite)
Windows Defender (anti spyware)

Wow.

I am a laymen. I read through the KnowledgeBase article and gleaned from it
as much as I can comprehend. I do not pretend to understand it, but I infer
from it that I should install updates 912945 and 912812.

I checked the list of Windows updates in the Add/Remove Programs section of
the Control Panel and both these updates were applied on 3/7/2006 and
4/16/2006 respectively.

Is there something else I need to do?

T

Tom [Pepper] Willett

No, those updates are what made the changes.

So... are you saying that there is no way to tell Windows that I will accept
this ActiveX control from this website without having to click "OK" to the
popup message every time I look up a word (even for multiple lookups during
the same session)?

T

Tom [Pepper] Willett

That's what I'm saying.

Microsoft lost a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Eolas Technologies
Inc., a spinoff of the University of California. The jury in the case
decided that Microsoft's support for ActiveX controls, plug-ins and Java
applets in its Internet Explorer browser infringes on United States Patent
5,838,906, owned by the University of California and licensed to Eolas in
1994. Microsoft was ordered to pay $521 million to Eolas and the University
and also change the way Internet Explorer works

Thanks for your reply.

I did some research on this and found the following information which
explains this in plain-vanilla
English:
http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/res_eolas.htm#users

The second bullet:

"This will inconvenience the user and make it more likely that the user
will opt to go elsewhere."

is certainly the one that motivated me to post my original message. I now
find the site's usability annoying to the point of exhaustion and will look
for a desktop solution that will provide me with the same functionality
without reliance on the internet.

Thanks again for your help with this.
