Active X Enabled But Not Able To Get Updates From Microsoft Websit

I've done a repair on a windows XP professional system and when I go to
microsoft's website to get updates, it tells me I'm not setup to receive
Active X. I've done everything that the help has told me to do as far as
enabling all of the Active X setting, but I'm still not able to get
microsoft's website to scan for updates I may need. Any assistance would
greatly be appreciated.

Did you install the Active X Control by clicking on the yellow bar see this
link?
http://update.microsoft.com/microso...microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en&muopt=6

If the first link is broken try this one

I have set out below the way to manually download updates. This was
written for the normal situation but you will be invited to install the
Active X Control. I think your problem is that you did not.

To get to Windows Update try this route. Select Start, Help and Support,
Keep your computer up to date with Windows Update and double click
Custom. The system then check on you and then your system to see
what you need. At the end of this stage under Select by Type will be the
number of Updates available by category. Click on Critical and it will list
the details of those available. Check the option for each and every one
and then click on Install. You will then be offered the option to Save to
Disk or to Run. Select Run. The process is then fully automated until it
says hopefully Successful or Finished. You then restart the machine.

I tried what you send to do and I got an error as well going that route. But
when I tried the same on another machine it worked fine. Is there something
else that can be done or can ActiveX be downloaded?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Looked in both the Application and System logs and they both don't show
anything out of the norm during the reboot or when trying to access the web.
There were no red X or yellow warnings. What do you think I should do there
has to be a way around or work through. I truly appreciate your assistance.

Did you log in as Administrator before you tried to update?

No I didn't and the person is an administrator of the PC. This is a
non-network PC but I'll try that and let you know the results.
