Active Directory Restore through the replication.

I have a separate test environment(LAN) that replicates production
Active Directory, single forest, single site, two domains (parent and child trust) and 3 Domain Controllers(same dns and IP as the production DC)
I have not got much luck restoring AD onto the test environment because of the different hardware, and I want to restore AD database through the replication instead. My plan is to install a new DC into the production, take it off line when the replication occurs and introduce into a test environment. Will this scenario work? Has anybody already gone through that
Thanks!

You can create a DC take it offline and create a test environment. Once you
make the test environment you will need to seize the FSMO roles on the test
DC. Make sure that you are no longer connected to the live network before
doing this. You will also need to make sure that the DC is a GC. You can
then promote other DCs in the test domain.
