The prerequisite is that you have, or at least you setup during the
installation, DNS. DNS doesn't have to be able to resolve external names,
but has to be present for AD to function and run.
Personally, I would install and setup DNS before running the AD installation
(promotion).

Can't say I've seen problems either, but that's what I read. I also, like
to do the DNS manually as this rules out a couple of event log warnings and
errors and ensures I know exactly where I'm at ;-)
I read somewhere, that this (the wizard during dcpromo) is the preferred way
to do things with 2003 due to the Island problem fix...
