I purchased an upgrade to vista premium. After several days of nothing but
trouble I went ahead and did a clean install. Now vista is saying that I
need to activate but when I try to it is saying that I don't have a real copy
of vista. It also suggest to return the copy to my retailer or purchase
another copy. I think is is BS that if you have to do a re-install you have
to purchase another copy. How can I get this problem resolved?????

I did the same from an upgrade copy of Home Basic but after putting in my
activation code again everything went fine and I have lots more free hard
drive space and a system that runs much faster and doesn't keep going into
absence periods like it did after the upgrade. I've activated and it was
successful.

I feel stupid right about now. I was trying to activate using my Office
2007 key. When I used the right key everything worked great. Thanks for all
the input.

You are not the first person to try this <g> Nor the other way round

It would be cool if in such situations Microsoft thanked you for having
their other products and told you to get the Windows box. Since their
product keys have enough information to number all electrons in the visible
universe they should have some capacity to do that.

Dear Group,
Windows and Office Activation is like space travel, takes a long time to get
to the place where you can get legit software without breaking the bank.
Just bought Windows Vista for over 300 euros.

While it would be interesting, revealing too much information could
potentially make it easier for cracking attempts to learn more about the
key structure.

my brother bought a new comp and vista came with it.
one day I went and installed thinking if I did not like it I
could just uninstall it. well nooooooooooooooo.

You can't activate it, it is activated on his system. Vista will move to a
limited function mode. The only way to remove it is to reinstall your
previous OS. If XP, boot from the XP disk, during setup, you will need to
format the current Vista drive. This will remove Vista and allow you to
reinstall XP.

thank you I just don't want anything to go wrong with the new comp.
I just ordered a xp from microsoft so I will download it and will have what
I like I don't like vista anyway thanks again.

I'm basing my answer on what I've read, not personal experience.

If you do not activate it, your computer will go into a reduced capability
mode. I don't know exactly what that means, but I think you will find it
fairly useless.
If you try to activate it online, it will tell you the key is already in use
and will probably give you a phone number to call for activation. The
automated part of the phone call will probably fail and if you stay on the
line, a person will help you, and probably explain to you why you should not
do this activation. If you fib (aka lie) to the person, they may activate
it. Sometime later, your brother's computer will probably just quit or give
him some number of days to activate message. I don't think you want to go
there.

Depending on how you installed Vista, there may be a Windows.old file, and
you may be able to get back to your old OS with it. I can't recall the
procedure, but its been posted here many times. Otherwise, burn whatever
you want saved to CD or USB stick or whatever and reinstall your old OS
from recovery discs or whatever your system originally came with.
