If you haven't changed any hardware, you can activate online.

and if you have changed some hardware you can still activate online. Once
you have formatted and re-installed XP you will have 30 days to activate so
you can do it at your leisure once you're sure everything is working OK.

If by "activation code" you mean the 25-character alphanumeric Product
Key, you will not need a new one. Just enter the Product Key you
received when you purchased XP or your computer.

Greetings --

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a
charge. If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated
that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via
the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to
make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Pardon me for jumping in but I was researching activation of XP. I built a PC
for my 80 y.o. dad so he could try out digital photography. I took an old P2
based machine with a 10gig hd and bought a retail copy of XP Pro Upgrade for
him. Things went well for about 4 months and the machine stopped working.
Nothing in it except for XP and the CDburner are worth saving and he has
already shipped that drive and his copy of XP back to me. I want to make him
a new build better suited to photography with his copy of XP. Will I be able
to activate it again on this new machine? Will it be an online or phone
process? Should I try and do anything related to activation before I get the
new build up and running? Is there a deactivation hotline (haha). I guess you
can tell I'm pretty anxious about having to reactivate so any thoughts would
be appreciated. Thanks,
Scott

Since it's a retail copy, yes. You can move it from machine to
machine as often as you want. The only restriction is that it not
be on two computers at once.

Will it be an online
or phone process?

Four months since activation? Since it's over 120 days, it should
activate online.

No.

hotline (haha).

No, there's no such thing as "deactivation."

to reactivate so any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks,

It's a simple process and there's no need for anxiety.

Thanks for taking the mystry out of it!

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on and sell,
donate, or give it away. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, the new owner will most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
he/she might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

You can transfer such a retail upgrade copy to a new machine, provided
you clean it off the old one. You will still need the 'qualifying'
version of Windows as represented by its CD. Install, then When it
comes to activation, if it is more than 120 days since you last did it,
you will find it will go through on the net just like first time. If
not, you will have to phone a toll-free number that will be given, to
explain and swap one long number for another to check back as you type
it in
