The machine will no longer boot into Windows except into Safe Mode
with limited functionality - just enough for you to manually enter the
activation code after getting it by telephone from Microsoft.

Once the activation code has been entered full functionality will
return and everything will be intact.

See MVP Alex Nichol's article on product activation at

Good luck

The computer will cease to boot into a functional windows. It is my
understanding that you are presented with the product activation facility
from which you can activate windows and continue using your computer.
