Activation becoming more troublesome?

Had a couple of cases recently where brand-new licence-keys were simply
refused by Setup (definitely the right type for the CD) -and one today which
activated successfully after setup, then only seconds later claimed that
"hardware changes require a re-activation" - You guessed it, this time it
failed to activate. :-(

The keys came from sealed boxes, so they definitely hadn't been used before.

-Are other people having this kind of trouble?
 
Not if you use the Product Key that comes with
the Windows XP CD and enter it correctly.

That could be taken as an inflammatory statement.

There has been no change in how activation operates, at least none
that I am aware of, for about a year. The last change that I have
information about was with respect to the activation of BIOS Locked
OEM versions, and that was in Feb or March of 2005.

Misreading of the keys does happen, especially with the fonts used for
some versions. I have struggled with some keys on occasion only to
discover that what looked like an 8, even under magnification, was
actually a B; or vice versa. Likewise with 6 and G.

The reactivation prompt indicates the possibility of some sort of BIOS
or hardware irregularity, so that on a restart the system itself is
detecting the hardware differently from what it did on the original
install. Sometimes a BIOS update will have this effect.
