I am building a new computer because the motherboard on my old one was ruined. Can someone tell me if I can still use my xp home when it was activated on the old computer. Will it activate on a whole new build ? Thanks for any help.

Retail Windows XP Home costs about $200 US, OEM about $125 US.
Retail comes in a box, tri fold folder with Product Key permanently
affixed to the back.
OEM is usually shrink-wrapped CD with the Product Key on a removable
sticker intended to be affixed to the computer.

In either case, you should have no problem.
After installation attempt internet activation.
If that fails, choose the option to activate by phone.
Call the displayed number, done in about 5 minutes.
If OEM, you also may need to explain it is an upgrade and not a
different computer.
