Activating an MSDN product key

I installed using a non-MSDN version of XP and now I need to activate it
using my MSDN product key.

Is this possible? It's telling me invalid product key?

Normal MSDN subscribers would have retail keys for home and professional,
which would give an invalid product key message if you tried to use it with
OEM or Volume License install media.

Ouch. That's what I was afraid of. Is there anyway to do a reinstall like
an upgrade with the MSDN media so I don't have to completely rebuild the
machine?
