Action button doesn't resume slide show

Hello. I have a slide show that I want to use action buttons to have the
ability to move back and forth between slides. When I click a back button it
goes to the previous slide and the presentation "stops" When I click the
next button, I want it to move to the next slide, but I also want the
presentation to pick back up with the automatic advance. The navigation
button down at the bottom of the viewer is able to do that. And I have
notice that If I move to the next slide and the next slide does not have any
action buttons on it, then it will also work.

How can I get this to work?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry, but I'm having a tough time following here. You haven't received
any responses yet, either, which leads me to suspect that others are also
having trouble understanding.

You want to use action buttons to move back and forth between slides. You
want the forward (next slide) button to move to the next slide, and
sometimes you want that next slide to pause there (so you can move to the
back button) but sometimes you want that next slide to move forward
automatically.

I don't think you can have it both ways (unless you link to two separate
slides that happen to look identical). Then again, I think I'm still not
understanding, so probably there is a way to do what you want.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that the navigation button on the
Viewer is able to do that. Can you specify which button you're referring to
(there's more than one at the bottom of the 2003 Viewer) and what the button
is able to do?

I'm also not sure about this part -- If I move to the next slide and the
next slide does not have any action buttons on it, then it will also work Do
you mean that if you move to the next slide (without action buttons), that
slide will automatically advance?

You know, that sounds almost like you just need to set your slide
transitions to automatic after however many seconds. Maybe that will resolve
the rest of this as well?

Sorry for the confusion. Is there a way I can attach a small example?

Here is what I did.

Create a presentation with 4 slides (I put titles, 1,2,3,4). Set slide
tansition to advance after 2 seconds, no mouse click.

On slides 2 and 3 I put two action buttons (previous slide and next slide).

TO SEE WHAT I WANT TO HAPPEN:
- For this example, use the navigation bar that is at the bottom of the
viewer screen (THIS IS IMPORTANT)

- Start the show and let it go to Slide 3. When on slide 3, click the back
arrow button on the navigation bar. The presentation will go back to Slide
2. However, the slides do not start advancing again. You will stay at slide
2 until you click the forward arrow on the navigation bar. SO...

- Click the forward arrow on the navigation bar. The presentation will move
to Slide 3, AND - leave it be. It will advance automatically to slide 4 and
the presentation is over. As I was trying to describe, it resumes the timed
advance, and this is what I want.

TO SEE WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING:
- This time us the Action buttons that are on the slides.

- Run the presentation. Let it go to Slide 3

- When it's on slide 3, select the back arrow action button. The
presentation goes to slide 2 and stays there (same so far and this is good).

- From Slide 2, click the forward arrow action button. (THIS IS WHERE IT IS
DIFFERENT). The presentation will move to Slide 3 BUT will not pick up with
the timed advance. It stays on slide 3 will not do anything until I use the
navigation bar.

Now, I did create a macro that made this all work just the way I wanted.
Problem. Computers that we send this out for (incidentally, the first 4
computers we tried this on - in house) do not have security to allow macros
to run. It is unacceptable in our situation to expect the end user to
manipulate the security settings. Plus they may not even have powerpoint. I
tried to use the Create for CD option and it said it couldn't because of the
macros (viewer won't run them).

I would appreciate any help. All I want to know is how the navigation bar
in the view does this and why it won't replicate with the action buttons.

Thank You,
Wendy Whiteford

Hate to jump in with nothing but a workaround, but when you go back to a
slide you basically go back to the end of the slide (as if nothing works).
What works in this case is a blank slide in between each of the desired
slides, set the background to be the same as the next slide (in case you
have multiple designs), set the Slide Transition to "Automatically after 0
seconds", then link back to each specific blank slide (instead of Previous
Slide, select the blank slide before the last slide). This will immediately
go from the blank slide to the next slide (at the beginning of the slide)
and everything will work.

Hope this helps (and makes sense).
