Some of you may be aware that I have removed my wiki for alt.comp.freeware.

I haven't settled on a replacement, and it may be some time before I do so.
I am even toying with the idea of writing my own registration system to work
in conjuntion with a wiki - something that will take a long time to do,
assuming it ever gets done at all.

Susan is quite keen on the whole wiki idea, and I agreed to contact this group
to see what could be done about getting a wiki for the group in place. Susan has
set up a wiki at
http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/
which is intended for temporary use until a more permanent solution is found.

You might want to play with an "off the shelf" registration system from
hotscripts.com. I've seen them many times but have never tried one. The
ones I've seen need php on the server but there my be others.

Yes!!! :) The ACF wiki Mark created sold me on the benefits. I think we should keep it going.

There isn't anything there yet. I just got the URL (that took about 30 seconds).

The advantage of a pbwiki is that no set-up is required other than adding the content from the old
wiki. The disadvantage is that the free pbwiki "sites" have small ads at the bottom of the page (and
are limited in size). IMO it's not suitable as a permanent solution but might work nicely on a
temporary basis. Pbwikis are password protected - they're not vulnerable to spammers - (the password
could be emailed to anyone who wished to add content).

Pbwiki is one possibility. Please suggest alternatives. (There's plenty of space on the PWH site if
someone wants to create an ACF wiki there).

This may be a silly question, but how do I read the wiki? The link above
takes me to a log in page (name, password etc), but I don't want to make
changes, just have a sticky-beak.

Sorry, the site setting was still "private". I've just changed it to public so you can see pbwiki's
introductory page. I haven't added *any* content to the site - just got the URL.

To give you an idea of what a "real" pbwiki web page looks like here's a link to one bookseller's
pbwiki site. It has links to related pbwikis:

Thank you. All is revealed!

What an outpouring of comments. . . not. . . ;)

lemme put it this way. . .

the *empty* ACF wiki "site" is here: http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/

If no *objections* are posted I'll proceed ahead on and create the site. Would anyone like to help?

Go on, I'll help. The good news is that we can carve up the alphabet between
volunters based on the old wiki. So, the more, the merrier ... although
I'm thinking that the wiki isn't really all that big.

Thanks Mark. :) If you're ready to start please have at it. I'm not sure coordination will be needed
if there's a way to tell which pages have been created. The site may show that information somewhere
- if not perhaps do the index first. (I'm guessing that only one person at a time can add/edit pages.)

Some of the pages are outdated and can be omitted - I think that includes anything to do with the
Pricelessware CD. I suggest: if in doubt leave it out - the page can always be added later if it
*is* wanted.

OK. I'm on holiday on next week, so I can probably make a concerted effort
starting Friday night. I will be able to start sooner, but it will be
a slow process. Sorry about that.

No problem. :) meanwhile. . . I did a little experimenting. . . ;)

The FrontPage (revised):

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/

The InstallFreeware page is a straight copy and paste from your file - no revisions:

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/index.php?wiki=NoInstallFreeware

I think a search and replace in your files - changing a few formatting characters - will make
creating the web pages a very easy task. :) :) :)

Hi Mark,

copy and paste, copy and paste, what the heck, I'll just do a *few* more while I'm here. . .

Hey! Guess what? I think the new wiki has all the web pages now. A list of the pages is shown here
- if I missed anything let me know.

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/index.php?wiki=AllPages

While I was at it I downloaded a zip file of the site - that option is available on the adm. page:

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/admin.php

time to change the link on the PWH page and the daily info post. . .

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/

I've revised the daily alt.comp.freeware information post. It has the new wiki link and I have
discretely added the wiki password - it's at the bottom of the post - directly above the last line
(SOUL-OMIT-ARTICLE).

and. . .

I think I've *finally* figured out an easy way for ACF participants to add user tips and other
pertinent information to the descriptions of apps that are listed on the ACF info pages.

I've uploaded revised ACF info pages - there is a link for "comments" following the name of each
app. The link is to a page in the acfwiki. If the page exists it will be displayed. Pages that do
not exist when the link is clicked can be created - a page will open in edit mode.

You must be logged in to create/edit a page. This should be done *before* you click on a "comment"
link to create/edit it - else you'll be caught in an endless loop. . .

one example of how this all fits together. . .

I copied the wiki's info about CLCL into a "comments" page. CLCL's ACF info link is:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_DESKTOP.php#0110

The "comments" link shown there is:

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/index.php?wiki=0110

Comments please. Do the "comments" links look like a worthwhile addition to the ACF pages? Should
they be in a separate column on the web pages? I'll have to add some explanatory notes - it might be
better to call the links "ACF notes" (casual visitors to the site will not be able to edit the notes).
