"account not valid" during cluster configuration

A

andrea trevisani

Configuring the second node in a windows 2000 cluster
after an hardware failover, the configuration wizard
fails with the message:
"Either the specified account is not valid or the
account's domain could not be contacted ..."
after the section "Select an Account".

The account specified is a domain account (name:
ClusterService) with domain admin privileges

The domain is DOMIQ2K

The fields filled by the wizard look like so :
User : ClusterService@DOMIQ2K
Password:
Domain : ClusterService@DOMIQ2K

I supply the correct password but I'm not able to modify
the User or Domain values.

I suppose the Domain field is not correct (shouldn't it
be DOMIQ2K only?)

Any suggestion ?

When filling this in, make a choice if you are going to use the user
principal name context, or the pre-windows 2000 context. IOW:

User: (e-mail address removed)
Password: blah
vs.
User: user
Password: blah
Domain: domain

Mixing the two formats is going to produce inconsistent results.

Hello Andrea,

Thank you for your post!

The Cluster Setup Wizard is unable to process the new UPN user convention
of (e-mail address removed). This information is pulled over the from the working
node Cluster Service. To correct this problem go to the working node and
open services.msc, browse down to the Cluster Service and change the
service account name to netbios format (Domain\User). Once this is done,
stop and restart the Cluster Service on that node. You should now be able
to add in the second node to the cluster.

The reason why this fails is because when adding the second node the
cluster service account information is received from the first node. The
cluster setup wizard is expecting this account in the netbios format
(domain\user). If the first node has the cluster service account specified
as UPN the wizard is trying to resolve UPN\UPN
([email protected]\[email protected]) against the DC which will fail.
