I accidentally unchecked the aforementioned check box,
what do I have to do to get this back? I don't see that
option any more and can't find the setting anywhere. I
don't want files in explorer to automatically just open,
I want to be able to decide whether to open or to save,
which is the option I had before.

right click link, and select "save as". maybe the option
to always ask is there.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to the file type in question and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Check the box for "Confirm open after download".
