Accessing NTFS Files On Hardrives On Raid Setup From Dos?

D

Dave Hannam

Not being able to access NTFS Files from Dos.
1) I tried Active NTFS Reader For Dos v1.0, it will access the partions on
my Raid setup but it seems that it will only copy to Fat files, which will
only enable me to copy to A:\ Drive (Floppy). I would like to maybe copy
backup files to another partition on the Raid which are NTFS.
2) I'm still trying to work on NTFSDOS Pro v4.03 and working with DOS
commands, like copying Directories to other partions, but maybe it works
only to a FAT File system also. If I created a Fat Partition On my Raid, I
would have trouble converting the Backup files back to NTFS wouldn't I?
Once Again Thanks for your Helpful Input, Dave.

It has to do with a XP Pro SP1 repair that I needed to do a while back which
failed and I was not able to access my Partioned Raid Drives and I wanted to
get to some files to backup on the system Partion and Data Partion that I
had setup.

Dave.

If you can "copy" the files to a Fat32 partition you will then be able to use
all the DOS tools to deal with them. I have my system set up with my Windows
system on my C drive in NTFS, but ALL of my data files in Fat32, and another two
Fat32 partitions for image files of everything. Just create a temporary Fat32
partition and copy the files there if you can. You might even be able to use an
external drive.

Moving files between Fat32 and NTFS is no big deal at all and using Windows
explorer is fine. In order to restore my system files I simply restore the image
file (created with BootITNG or Drive Image) and it restores the exact file
system as it was when imaged.

Copies of data files, however, can be freely moved back and forth between the
two file system with ease. There is no need for any conversion. The benefit is
the files in the Fat32 partitions are viewable to DOS, Windows NTFS, Windows
Fat32. I had a dual boot system before and I needed to have the data files
available to WindowsME and WindowsXP - now that I've eliminated WinME, I still
feel more comfortable with my data in Fat32 so I can deal with them in DOS if
needed. Main benefit of NTFS is supposedly security, my system is at home, super
security is not an issue as I backup data every evening and full BU's weekly to
another drive and CD.

Hope this helps,
Fred
