Accessing MS Office/Word or Excel for First Time

I purchased a Brand New Dell Laptop with XP Professional 2002 Version 2
already installed from Dell UK In December 2006, every time I go to open
Office/Word or Excel Applications I have to provide a CD Key I therefore
input the Microsoft CD Key Data from the base of the Laptop and immediately I
am informed that this is the incorrect key.
I contacted Dell and they tell me it is not their problem as the XP system
is operating and the problem belongs with Microsoft - That doesn't seem right
as the programmes must have been put there by Dell. Unfortunately it means
that having purchased the item I need to pay for support which is expensive
before I can use Office that just does not seem fair and I refuse to pay it.
My question is - 'Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue myself as I
have been unable to use Word/Office applications since purchase of the laptop.

Thank you in advance of any support offered

The key on the base of the laptop is for the Windows XP Operating System,
not the Office applications.

These are most likely trial versions of Office, so you'll need to purchase
the applications. If you actually purchased the applications as part of a
bundle, then Dell is responsible for providing you with the keys.

Thanks Tom,
The Laptop was purchased as part of a large consignment from Dell (Approx 18
Laptops) for our members and all of the others have no problem operating
Office etc. I therefore assume from that, that all software was with the
system on purchase. When I contacted Dell in Eire they told me that it was a
MS problem? I do not accept that.

Look to see if the key codes on the PCs that work OK are the same or
different on each PC, if the key code is the same for all your Office
installation (All the PCs) then Dell may have used a License pack. You can
then try that key code on the PC that your are having problems with. If the
key is different on each PC then look for supplied documentation for each PC
for a key code and license for MS Office.

To find the key code use Belarc Advisor:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
It does a good job of providing a wealth of information.
You will find the key code listed near the bottom of the results displayed
by Belarc Advisor.

JS has posted a suggestion that you use Belarc Advisor. This is well
worth a try. It shows some product keys but not others on my computer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for info.

I keep a careful note of product keys. It was Office 2000 that does not
show up for me in Belarc. I preferred Everest but it's become dated
unless you purchase. I have looked at Fresh Diagnose but they're pushy
and intrusive.

You're correct, Fresh Diagnose and their other utilities are pushy in that
you get far too many emails on new updates. It seams like they make changes
to the product in very small increments and announce that a new version is
available. Still it's a useful tool.
