Error Message:

\\[Computer Name] was not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.

I have set up a network at home. Both computers are running XP Home.

I am able to see the two computers in the workgroup on each computer. #

From A I can access B. However, when I try and access B from A, I get the
above error message. I think I have tried everything.

Filesharing is on, on both computers. I've uninstalled an reinstalled the
network connection a number of times.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can't tell which computer you are having trouble with: "From A I can access
B" and "access B from A" sound the same.

Anyway, whichever one it is, make sure the firewall is not enabled.

From what I understand, XP home ALWAYS uses the Guest
account for access between computers even if the Guest
account is disabled. Make sure you have the Guest account
enabled on the computer you're trying to connect to and
make sure the Guest account has permisions to the share
and folder. By default the guest account only has access
to the shared documents folder. MS has a few articles
about this problem with the Home edition. (Not a problem,
it's planned. They want you to pay more money to upgrade
to XP Pro.)

Sorry, this should have read "From A, I can access B. However, when I try
and access A from B, I get the error message."

Firewalls are off.

Turned on the Guest Account on both machines (both were initially off), but
still nothing (firewalls are off). There are hundreds of messages in
different forums on the web with problems similar to mine, but no one seems
to have the solution.

You wouldn't happen to know which MS articles address the issue, would you?
I have searced the db and found nothing useful.

Here are a few to check.

308418 How to set, change file permissions in XP
304040 Description of file sharing in XP
303248 Simple file sharing
307874 Cannot disable simple file sharing in XP home

Two notes to remember:
Remote users always authenticate as guest when simple file
sharing is enabled.
XP Home computers always have Simple file sharing enabled.

Also, make sure the guest account (or Everyone group) has
permissions set in the share (and folder if NTFS) that you
are trying to access.

You may want to check to see if the guest account (or
Everyone group) has access rights to access the computer
remotely. I think it's there by default.
