Access2000 in Office 2003: Autonumber field won't continue on requested number

Kerempuh

Hello,

trouble is this...

I have input table where first field is Autonumber, that increases
with new record, rest of data is demographic...

users did their magic and now first field jumped from 317 to 324
instead of 318...i deleted records 317 and 324, and new record gets
Autonumber 325...WTF....

MDB file is version 2000, but Office is 2003

Every sugestion is welcomed,

thanks in advance

You need to do a compact and repair on the data table. It will then start
the next autonumber immediately after the highest one.

You do not have to care what the number is in a AutoNumber column. If you do
care, then you should not use AutoNumber as a column's data type. The only
purse of AutoNumber type is to make sure the number is unique in a table
when database automatically generates it.

I doubt compacting (as the other post suggested) will make the next number
in sequence, unless you erase all records in table and then do the compact.

Search this NG for "AutoNumber", you will get dozens or hundreds posts
regarding on this and you would know that either you do not have to care
what the number would be, or you should not use AutoNumber at all.

Compact and repair will make the next new record take the next autonumber in
sequence.
