Access to restricted folders in xp home

M

Microsoft

I windows xp home on 2 networked computers. I would like to make some
backups of the other computer but windows will not allow it. How can I make
this computer access thinks like My Documents, program files etc. Across a
network. I have given access on the target computer and I can access all of
the folders but these couple.

In Home edition, access to fileshares over the network
requires that the underlying NTFS permissions grant access
to the Guest account.

Sorry for that fake MS name I guess they put that in there when you set up a
new outlook exp news account!

I didn't notice I was pretending to be M$.

Anyway how do I do that? This seems like a simple thing. I just want to
backup the rest of the computers in my familyroom from this one! There
should just be a check box someplace! I don't want to hire a network admin
for my home.

I have an idea where to start if any of these machines were pro. The
security dialogs are missing in home.

Well yes, but then you do have Home edition, and this is
permanently set into Simple sharing mode, and that is what
is getting in your way.
If you have the space, can you devise a local backup to file
and then only have to move these over the network?
The main issue is that when something access Home over
the network all access to the resources on the machine are
done as the Guest account. Hence, to backup the machine
over the network Guest would need permissions everywhere.

OK it sounds like you are telling me what I had thought from the begining
and that is that there isn't any way to do this short of making a bat file
and scheduling it in the middle of the night. This is probably what I will
do.

I have plenty of space on either machine both have at least one 120gb drive,
this one has 2. It really seems like there should be a way to make a user
which has "Admin" privilages everywhere.
