We have two XP SP3 computers, each behind a router, 1000 miles apart. The local
computer needs to access one file on the remote computer five to seven times per
week.

To keep this post short, we do not want to use Remote Desktop Connection,
GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, pcAnywhere, VNC, email, or SendSpace. Also, the remote router
is not VPN-capable.

What capabilities are built into XP that will allow us to make this temporary
daily connection? FTP?

Hello

Not a plain vanilla FTP, but "Secure FTP". Ports on both systems may &
should be closed to this age old security hole. Read up on Secure FTP
to see if that's what you'd like.
