access to my document folder in XP

Dorothy

I turned off my computer. When I restarted the computer,
the icon for the my documents folder on C: had
disappeared. When I go to C:/Doccuments and
settings/owner file, I get the message Access denied,
full, write protected or in use. If I check the size of
the memory of C, the files appear to still be on the
computer because there is no change in memory use size.
I have tried to set up an administrator account but that
has no helped to get access to the my document folder.
Thanks,

While logged on to the account with the missing My Documents folder, click
Start> Run and type %userprofile% into the text box. Click OK. Windows
Explorer will open with the focus on the folder for the account you are
currently using.

I suspect that you will find you are not logged on to your usual account.
Instead, you are on a temporary account because XP could not load your user
profile. This usually occurs when there is some registry damage in a user's
profile. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318011)

Create a new user account for yourself. Transfer your personal files to it.
You will need to "take ownership" of the files in the old My Documents
folder to regain access to them:

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for your help. However, when I tried to go to
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318011)I
get an error: file no longer available. I did see the
MicroSoft knowledge Base Article 318011. Is this
information I need? I appreciate your assistance.
Frankly, I am not that versed in XP.
Thanks
Dorothy

Article 318011 explains what went wrong. The other one tells how to regain
access to the folders from your old account. It appears that the Knowledge
Base has changed the format on their links once again. Here's a new link
for you (have tested the link from my machine to be sure that it goes to
the "ownership" article):
