access thru XP firewall

I need to allow access thru XP firewall on a 2 computer LAN for 1 program to
access data. This program is set up as serrver/client. I assume I need to
open the server side firewall, but I am uncertain as to how to do this.
Under the firewall settings there are preconfigured choice, such as, POP3. I
figured I coiuld not use these but need to "ADD" one. It asks for a
external and internal port. I do not need outside the LAN access. What ports
do I use. Can I choose ports at random, such as, 5200. I tried that but it
did not work. Any advised is appreciated.

You will have to contact the manufacture of the software and ask what ports
need to be open for this program to work. There are 65,535 possible ports
and you will never just guess the right one.

If you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, the new Windows Firewall allows to enter programs as exceptions, not only ports. This is a good option for applications which stay "listening" at random ports or for applications whose used ports are not well-known, for example.
