Access taking over WordPerfect Files - extensions

I save my WordPerfect text files with extensions reflecting the month. I
just installed Access. Access took over 15 years worth of "march" WP files
and converted them to Access shortcuts that I can now not open, rename, or
otherwise access. I went into folder options and changed the setting so MAR
files would be opened with WordPerfect, but it did not correct the problem.
I have GOT to be able to get these files back. Help?

well, i tried it several more times, renaming mar files in folder options,
and it finally took. if this is going to harm anything in my eventual access
use, i guess i will be back then! thanks. any further comments welcome.

I don't see why you can't just launch word perfect, and then go
file->open.....

The fact that you are changing file extensions on a monthly bases means that
word perfect would not have been able to open the files by clicking on them
either. So, really, you MUST have been launching word perfect first, and
then opening the files. Since, if you change the file extensions each month,
then what software appcation would know to open the files anyway??

on the other hand, perhaps you don't have file extensions turned on in
windows...and actually have file names with a "." in them. In fact, that
seems about the only way the files could be hi-jacked anyway.

While viewing any windows open folder. go tools->folder options

Then, on the view tab, go

uncheck the hide extensions for known file types. That way, you can be sure
what you are typing in for file extensions...

Hello Albert,

Pls forgive me for not thanking you sooner, I am just figuring out how the
msg boards work. Even from WordPerfect (or any other word processor) you
could not open the file - the computer deemed it an Access file only. But I
found the problem and thought I would share.

In Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options, there is a tab for "File
Types". When I installed Access, the .mar Access extension was automatically
installed here as a "Registered File Type", taking over all WP files with
this extension. I was able to change it back here - and also to add all my
month extensions so WP will recognize the files even if the program is not
yet opened! So it was a scare that turned into a very helpful discovery.
