Access Security Login Feature

Hi. I am a somewhat inexperienced user of Access, and have been using the
multiple user login feature for the past several months with our database.
(This database was originally created in Access 2000, but people in our
office are now using 2003. Platforms are Windows XP and 2000.

The users currently access the db via the shortcut interface (both shortcut,
security file, and db stored on a network drive). However, mysteriously, some
users can now just double-click on the actual database and gain access to it,
when previously access was denied. The login shortcut still works, but access
to the actual database is not limited for some users. I am at my limit!
Thanks, Emily

Sounds to me like the file was never secured in the first place. Many
people will start adding users and groups to a workgroup file and think that
is all there is to it. They fail to read all the steps involved in securing
a database. Then, some smart Access user comes along and tries to open the
file with their default workgroup file. This signs them on as ADMIN and
they have full access to the file. In short, the only people you are
locking out are the ones who follow the proper procedures on your computer
to open the file using the defined workgroup. Anyone who takes the file
home with them has full access!

You need to read and re-read the security FAQ and follow all the steps. I'm
guessing that the workgroup file you are using still has the "admin" user
with full permissions to the file. They may not know the password for your
ADMIN userid, but they can sure sign on as ADMIN using their own file.

Make a few backups to be safe, then dive into the following "light" reading.

Good Luck,
Rick B
