access runtime version

hi all

can a mdb file created in access 2000 be used (data edited / deleted & added
and reports produced) using an access runtime version rather than the full
version of access?

Cheers

Well, that's pretty much the entire point of the runtime. As long as you
don't need design changes, the runtime can do (most) everything the
licensed version can.

(unless I'm not understanding the question).

Hi Rick

okay, i'm guessing i was just checking to see if i needed the developer's
version to "compile" (or whatever) the mdb into some other format for the
runtime to work. Or whether i can just give them the "mdb" as is and it
will work straight away.

Actually, neither of your suggestions are exactly correct.

While the Developer Edition doesn't alter the mdb in any way, shape or form,
you do have to package it up together with the run-time in order for your
users to be able to install the run-time and use your application.

See whether what Tony Toews has at
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/developereditionfaq.htm helps.

For what it's worth, you may want to convert the mdb into an mde before
distributing.

Hi Douglas

unfortunately i can't seem to access that web page :(
the story is that i've developed a database for a company and i specified
that they needed to have access on each of the machines that were going to
run the database - and this they agreed to. However they came back to me
yesterday and said that their IT dept had said that they don't need access
on the machines only the run-time version which they have free licences for
and that my db will work on this. Now, the co-ordinator of the project has
asked me if there will be any problems with this. Unfortunately, i haven't
used the developer's version or the run-time since ver 95 and have no idea
of how it now works and whether or not there will be problems - hence my
post.

it is a shame that i can't access the web page as it might contain the
information i am after. If however, you could shed further light on the
subject, i would be grateful as they're expecting an answer tomorrow.

i was not planning to do anything with the database other than split it and
leave it as a mdb as there are poeple in the organisation (who do have
access on their machines) who may be making changes to it in the future.

Regards

If the runtime's already installed, then you may get away with simply
plopping the MDB on the workstations.

You'll have to try it and see...
