Access Problem

I have 2 computors (running XP pro sp2 and xp home sp2) which are linked
through ethernet hub. 1 is the main which has the direct internet connection
and the other connects to the internet through the main. This connection is
working fine and I can access the internet through either computor.
I have set certain folders on each machine as shared folders but cannot
access them as i get a message \\main is not available. You might not have
permission to use this network. Contact administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions.

I used to have zonealarm and got round this message by turning it off when i
wanted access to files on either machine, but since installing sp2 i have
used windows fire wall and evan by switching it off I still cannot access
either machine.

I have re run the network wizard on both computors and this hasnt solved the
problem.
Can anyone help as it is very frustrating

Fred,

If your file sharing error was resolved by disabling Zone Alarm, then it would
appear that Zone Alarm was not properly configured. Many people use Zone Alarm,
and do NOT have to turn it off to share files.

When you installed SP2, what did you do with Zone Alarm? Did you un install it,
completely, per instructions from Zone Labs:
http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/CompleteUninstallNonNT.html

If you still have ZoneAlarm, it would be far batter idea for you to re enable
it, configure it properly, and disable Windows Firewall from the Security
Center, or Windows Firewall, wizard. Windows Firewall is better than nothing,
but Zone Alarm, properly configured, protects you better than Windows Firewall.

I'm having a similar problem - I successfully had 3 computers networked prior
to the release of SP2 (which is now installed on all machines). I recently
added a computer to the network and I too am receiving that message.

However, I am using Norton Internet Security which I have tried disabling
and uninstalling. Whenever the new computer tries to access #1 computer it
is denied with the "computer" is not available. You might not have
permissions etc. message.

The #1 computer can access the new computer though?

My network is connected through an adsl/router

For the sake of everybody here (you, the OP, me, the other helpers here), please
start a new thread with a different Subject, and something a bit more
descriptive than "Access Problem".
