What is the general way to understand why

Your question is far too vague for anyone to be able to give a reasonable
answer.

What version of Access are you using? What version of Windows? Have you
applied all service packs to both?

What problem(s) are you encountering? Do you get error messages? If so, what
are the error messages?

The error message is 'Unrecognized Database Format'

Two common reasons.

The first is that the database was created in a newer version of Access than
what you have. For example, if it was created in Access 2003 using the
Access 2002/2003 file format as opposed to the default Access 2000 format,
you'd get that message if you tried to open it using Access 2000. Note, too,
that if you've got more than one version of Access installed on your system,
the .mdb file extension gets reregistered so that it's always associated
with the last version of Access used. That means that if you simply
double-click on the .mdb file in Windows Explorer, the "wrong" version of
Access may be trying to open the database.

I must admit my initial very flippant response was to put some diapers
on Access.

I have some more info

The office has 3 computers, while one of the users was away, everything was
fine as soon as the user returned the database became corrupt. Once the Find
didn't work then one of the report didn't work etc. a compact and repair was
good only for some time

I thought that this user may have a different version to the other 2 and
that causes the problem.

So I got the versions of all commuters

They all have Access 2000 and the format of the file is Access 2000

but the version information after that may be the problem

That user is:
9.03821sr-1

And the other 2 is:
9.02720
9.0.8948 sp-3

Get them all up to the most recent service pack. A2000 was pretty flaky at
best, but if you have different machines running different versions, you're at
real risk of corruption.
