I have just networked 2 PCs using my wireless router. One of the PCs can
access on shared files and folders on both PCs but the other one cant access
the Shared files or folders on the other PC.

I get a message when trying to access the other PC that states Access is
denied, please check you have permissions. I have tried evreything. All
drives are shard and File and Print sharing is enable. I have also turned
off the SP2 firewall on both PCs.

Any help would be great as I'be been trying to do this for days. Thanks

Are you running XP Home, XP Pro, a combination, other? All of this makes a big
difference.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set on each computer.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, setup and use a common non-Guest account on all
computers. Whatever account is used, give it an identical, non-blank password
on all computers.

On XP Home, and on XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest, with Start - Run -
"cmd", then type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. Ensure
that the password for Guest is blank, with Start - Run - "control
userpasswords2"; select Guest, click Reset Password, click OK without entering a
new password.

Remember, with Simple File Sharing, you'll not be able to access "C:\Program
Files", "C:\Windows", or any of the profile related folders such as "My
Documents". All of those folders require individual user, or administrator
access, and Guest access gives you neither.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer
from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list.

Do the PC's have XP Pro or XP Home installed? There are limitations for file
sharing with XP Home. See the following article:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/10_concept_file_share_setup.mspx

Limitations to file sharing
While you can share most files on your computer, there are a couple of
limitations:
a.. You cannot share your copy of most software programs, such as
Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. You can share files created by the
program, but the program itself needs to be installed on each computer in
your workgroup.
b.. You cannot share certain protected folders on your computer. These
include the Documents and Settings folder, the Windows System or System 32
folder, and the Program Files folder. You also can't share files from other
users’ profiles.

Hi NutterUK. If you get any joy with your problem lets us know coz I got
exactly the same problem. Posted a question just before you. Thanks david2505

Well, as you may have read on another posting, I had a similar problem with
my setup and I got it working by UNSHARING and then RESHARING the access to
the disks on both computers.

This seems to be a HUGE problem with XP Home.

It's worth a try.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies! Sorry I'm running XP Home on both PC's. I have
activated guests on both PCs with no password protection. I have just tried
setting it up again and changing the PC names(Which are different). The same
is still happening with one PC unable to access any shared
files/folders(Access denied) where the other PC works fine.

Any more sugestions would be great.

Thanks again

The "Access denied..." error has several possible causes.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, as a start.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.
7) Please don't munge or omit any detail, as a case like yours will best be
resolved with details.

The browser is a possible cause of problems like yours.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.

Well, since you didn't mention it, I have to ask? Did you UN-share both C:
drives, reboot both machines, RE-share both C: drives, and then another
reboot of both machines? That's what I did and it fixed it.

Be sure to shut them all down including the router, then fire up the router
first, then both the computers. Sometimes it takes a while (:30
minutes) before it gets it all figured out and shows up in Network
Neighborhood, View Workgroup Computers

Also, if internet connectivity is an issue, you can go to each machine and
get into the CMD line (Start/Run/Cmd) and type ipconfig/release and then
ipconfig/renew. Type Exit to return to Windows.

Good luck,

Tom
