"Access is Denied" W2K to WXP SP2 fileshares

Have an interesting problem that seems fairly common
according to the current threads being posted, however I
have a different twist..

I work from home on a W2K SP4 laptop from which I backup
files weekly to my WXP SP2 machine... Well, that was at
least before SP2..

I CAN actually connect to the fileshare, however I get the
message "F:\ is not accessible. Access is Denied."

I've tried it with the Firewall on and off.. Simple File
Sharing is enabled.

Username and password is the same on both machines
(although that hasn't mattered in the past)

I can definitely see the WXP SP2 shared directories and
printer from the W2K machine and can connect but cannot
see the contents or move files...

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Ron

I have two WinXP machines, both with SP2. I had the same problems
accessing data after SP2, until I started fiddling with the Local
Security Settings in Configuration Panel-> adminstrative Tools (I have
a Dutch WINXP version). I added some users to a few options (don't
even really know what they were), but after I added my profile
(username) to something like 'Trusted computer and useraccount for
deligation' (I have dutch words, so dont't know the english precisely)
and 'access this computer from network' everything worked! I have
total control over my network PC again!

Ron,

could you try to share some folder, i.e. create an entirely new
share, on the Windows XP computer? Does that work?

How exactly do you try to access the share? Just by clicking on
it in My Network Places?

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm as
well. Have a look particularly at the problems concerning
Winsock corruption and repair. Check the computer for adware,
for example using SpyBot.

Thanks Hans-Georg

I did try creating a brand new share and that did the
trick... I don't get why the "Shared Documents" directory
won't share.. I did unshare and reshare it but that didn't
work..

Anyway, problem solved for now! Thanks again..

Ron,

it's a pity we only found a workaround, rather than the cause,
but if the Shared Documents are no longer shared, then something
in Windows XP broke, and it may be difficult to find out what
that is.
