Hello,

I lost my Win2k boot disk to a crash a while ago, and
thought that since I had to reinstall anyway, I might as
well get that upgrade to XP. So I got XP home edition,
and a fresh hard drive to install it on. The
installation went flawlessly. I also have two other hard
drives with data from the Win2k Pro system I used to
have. I can access most files on those disks, but the
files that I had set permissions on so that only my
personal Win2k user could see are out of my reach. My
userid and password are the same in the XP system as they
used to be in Win2k, but I guess some internal identifier
is not. So, I'm wondering... does anyone have an idea on
how I can access my files? Some of them are very
important to me... I'll look in this group, and my email
is javvlar at hotmail dot com. Any replies appreciated.

thanks,

/T

Kevin, Steven...

thank you for your replies, and for setting my mind at
ease. I now know that I can get my files back. But when
I took ownership of the folders, I did say to take
ownership of subfolders and objects too. It gave me the
ownership of all folders, but not the files in them. I
have to go in and repeat the same process on the file
level to get that. The folder containing downloads from
my digital camera contains thousands of files... I will
fix them individually if I have to, but I don't really
want to. :-) Is there anything that can be done from,
say, within a script / batch file to take ownership of
individual files?

Many thanks!

You should not have to do that. After you take ownership then give yourself full
permissions and go into advanced page and select "replace entries on all child
objects...". It is a two part process. Taking ownership has to be done first because
it allows you to add yourself to have full permissions AFTER taking ownership. ---
