Access files created in previous version

Hi,

I'm having trouble accessing a file created in a previous version of word.

Here is the error message:
This error occurs if you try to open a Microsoft Office document and the
file type for that document has been blocked by a registry policy setting. To
help secure your computer, Microsoft or the administrator of this computer
implemented a registry policy setting that prevents opening this type of file.
To open documents with this file type, disable the registry policy setting.
For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 922850.

How do I change this

Thanks

Perhaps a good start would be to read the knowledge base article and follow
the instructions provided?

Thanks for your reply, perhaps I should have mentioned this in my original Q,
but I have read the Knowledge base article and couldn't edit my registry as
not all levels of the registry were available. I only get as far as
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft, I don't have an Office
subfolder to go through the entire process.

I just think there must be an easy way to access the file, I know it was
e-mailed from a trustworthy source, surely it should be as simple as a double
click when a simple setting is changed somewhere?

To quote from the page

"If the FileOpenBlock subkey does not exist, you must create it"

If the preceding layers are not available, create them.

If you copy the following to Notepad and save it as 'patch.reg', you can
merge the required registry entries for Word 2003 (11.0) and 2007 (12.0). If
you only need access to one of these products, delete the lines referring to
the other.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Security]
"FileOpenBlock"="0"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Security]
"FileOpenBlock"="0"

Easier than creating the Registry entries yourself is to use the
downloadable updated provided in Method 1 of
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938810.
