ACCESS DENIED.......

C

Cliff Wragg

My set up is 1 desktop, and 2 laptops. The laptops are wireless
networked, and the desktop is hardwired.
All 3 machines see each other, and I can access all on the 2 laptops
(except Program Files and Windows folder, which is an XP restriction, I
gather) from the desktop (full permissions granted). BUT, I can't
access the desktop from either of the laptops, even though I have set
all the permissions.
I also have an error window, when I boot the desktop (which has always
been there, from before SP2 was installed) which says access to drive c
denied (for Norton).
When I try to read the drive from another machine, it says access
denied, you may not have the permission to access.....etc.
I have tried all the steps on the Symantec site, and I have looked
through the microsoft help site (trying some of the permission setting
steps), but my desktop still seems to have the block on accessing drive
c from anywhere other than itself.
All 3 machines are XP Pro SP2, so why the difference in response? Any
ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

Hi Cliff,

Start/run secpol.msc

Expand Local Policies/Security Options, locate this one:

Network Access: Let everyone permissions apply to anonymous users

Double-click it and enable it.

Thanks Rick. I did that (it had been set at disabled) but still no
difference. As soon as I try to access any of the shared parts (either
the c drive or my documents) it tells me that Access is denied. You
might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator........etc

Can you suggest any other options?

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE...........

Your suggestion put me onto a track that took me past the event viewer,
and there I saw something about an irpstacksize. The links then took me
to a help page which told how to adjust the registry setting in
lanmanserver to be 15 (It was set at 6)

Now it's all sorted.

So thanks you for your input, and maybe there is somewhere to note this
solution, since it does appear from all the posts I've looked at in my
search that this is not an uncommon problem.

Thanks again

I have the same problem too!
However, my solution is to Resume the service "Server" (in Registry called
lanmanserver). Normal setting is Automatic, but someone/something/whatever is
pausing it after booting. I can't what is going on and change this back to
normal. Can you?
You find the setting area in Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools -
Services, look for Server - right click - Properties - General folder.
I thought the irpstacksize was set automatically by Windows XP SP2 and
maybee in SP1. This solution worked for me before when the number of disks,
files and folders increased by time.
Also check at Symantec Site Document ID:2001122707472207 about "Attention:
Access Denied, Drive C" which occurs after installing Systemworks.
Have a nice day out there,
Björn
