Access denied when trying to connect to XP Pro from XP Home

I have a wireless network setup between an XP Pro and an XP Home computer.

I have trouble getting access to certain folders on the Pro PC from the
Home PC.

Whenever I try to do this, I get the following message:

“\\<computer name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to
find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied.”

I have literally spent a couple of months trying to get to the bottom of
this. I am at my wits end - the XP Pro machine can see and access the
XP Home shared folders great, the XP Home machine can see the XP Pro on
the network, but can't see certain shared folders, and gives the above
error message when trying to access them. What am I doing wrong?

I can see all the folders that I want to share on the Pro PC in "My
Network Places" on the Home PC, but not open all of them. The folders
that I can open are all in the Administrator's account on the Pro
machine. The folders that I cannot open are all in another account.

I have tried to disable Simple File Sharing, that didn't work. I have
tried to enable the Guest Account on the Home machine, but that did not
work either.

I am certain that all of this has to do with the way Pro handles
security much more rigidly than Home. I just need to figure out how to
give the Home PC access to all the folders I want to give it access to.

I would think that enabling sharing of a folder would do it.

I do hope someone can help me with this one.

Thanks

Abrasha,

what account are you using from the Home computer to access the PRO
computer?
You need an account that has the same name and password on both computers if
they are in a workgroup or at least know an account with priviledges on the
pro computer.

You said that you can access administrator folder on pro from home, but you
cannot access some other account folders. You will have to share those
folders as well as give permission to those folders.

Share on PRO means make available on the network, however there are security
settings like who can access and what level of access that you need to set.

hope this helps,
RT

Abrasha,

There are several possible reasons for the error "...might not have
permission...access denied".

Be sure that you understand the relationship between file sharing in Windows XP
Home and Pro, Simple File Sharing, the Guest account, and the need for matching,
non-blank passwords. These relationships are not trivial.

Please ask more questions if necessary. And be patient with us.

I am having the same sort of problem
Both PCs are in the same workgroup
I am an administrator on both the Pro and home PCs using the same password
I can see the home PC form the Pro Pc but cannot connect to it.
File sharing is turned on.
When I connect another Pro computer to the network i can share files and
printers between the two pro computers with no problems.

Bruce,

Threads dealing with this sort of problem may get long and involved. You'd be
helping everybody, including yourself, if you were to start a new thread, with a
descriptive and unique title.
