Access 2007 crashing with right click on subform

Glenn Siswick

I have had the above problem on some (not all) legacy databases when running
on Access 2007. I have found in my case that the crash only happens on legacy
databases with custom menus / toolbars and in particular with the output to
ms word and excel buttons from the tools menu.

If I remove the above mentioned buttons from the customised toolbar I no
longer get the crash when right-clicking a subform in A2007.

Note: Initially I deleted the whole custom toolbar, but still experienced
the crash.

Hope this helps anyone with similar problem.

Firstly, make sure you have Service Pack 1 for Office 2007. You can download
it from here:
http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.aspx?AssetID=DC102486291033&Origin=HH102511011033&CTT=5

After that, the May 23 2008 hotfix addressed an issue where the database
hangs when you right-click a subform, but is says the problem occurs on the
Japanese version of Windows:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952699/

You say this problem shows up in some databases that began life in an
earlier version, so it would be worth performing the standard maintenance
sequence on these databases:
http://allenbrowne.com/recover.html
Those steps address a whole range of issues that could be involved.

If it it is still occuring after that, see the Preventing Corruption article
here:
http://allenbrowne.com/ser-25.html
Particularly #3 under preventing corruption during development.

Allen,

Thanks for the suggestions, but I have applied SP1 + certain hotfixes,
copied all objects into a new database and have still experienced the problem
on Access2007 (along with others when I search past posts), but not when
running the applications with access 2000 or 2003. As I have put in my post,
if I remove the output to word button from the custom toolbar the crash no
longer happens and the remainder of the custom toolbar works just fine.

A legacy database I have that has no custom tool/menu bar and works just
fine under A2007 experiences the same crash if I apply a custom toolbar with
the output to word button.

I have tried the output to notepad and get the sam crash, but have not
extensively tested other commands from the Tools menu.

Best Regards,
Glenn.

So you have in intermittent crash, under Access 2007.
You have a custom toolbar that includes the built-in Office-Links button.
When you click this button to 'Publish to Word', Access 2007 crashes in some
databases (but not in others), and only if the focus is in a subform.

I have not heard of that issue, and I don't see it in Microsoft's
knowledgebase.

If someone else has a suggestion, please post it.

To try and clarify:

On a datasheet subform, right-clicking causes access2007 to shutdown on all
databases I have written in previous versions where I have a custom toolbar
which has the publish to word button on. Legacy databases without custom
toolbars work just fine.

If I create a custom toolbar including the publish to word button on I get
the crash. If I remove this button I can right-click without getting the
crash.

I know from past experience of trying to solve the problem that other
developers have experienced similar problems with the right-click crash and
posted this to see if they have/had a similar scenario.

Or could possibly someone test out the theory by creating such a custom
toolbar in a legacy database and see if A2007 crashes?

Thanks & Regards,
Glenn.

I am also currently experiencing this problem. In my case the db is legacy
2003 mdb with custom toolbar that does NOT include the Office Links button.
The client is running the mde version on AC2007. The crash happens on both
the mdb and mde versions under AC2007 but not on AC2003.

The problem is effecting at least 10 new Office07 installations with all
service packs and updates.

Has there been any progress in the last month on this issue?

Have you any other button/command from the legacy Tools Menu incorporated in
the toolbar? I ask because output to excel and notepad also experienced the
crash, but I did not try any other commands.

I would personally, if practical, start with building the customised toolbar
again and testing in 2007. Also note from my first post, deleting the toolbar
itself did not resolve the crash.

All I can say is that by removing the said buttons resolved the crashing in
my legacy databases.

Good Luck.

Office SP2 appears to fix the problem with Office Links buttons (although no
mention in documentation) suggest you may try SP2 and see if it resolves your
particular problem.

Glenn

That's good news, Glenn

SP2 does address exporting reports to Excel, so there are changes in that
part of the program. Good to know the export-to-Word is fixed as well.
