Access 2003

I assist someone who's business relies upon the contacts in the database. I'm
new to Access, and only have a very cursory understanding of how it works.

The issue is that my job is to constantly add contacts to the database, and
she needs constant access to the database at the same time. When I've been
working on entries, she is not able to open the database. She claims that
with her previous assistant, they were both able to be on the database at the
same time, and thinks that the fact that I have several applications (Word,
Firefox, Outlook...etc) open at the same time is preventing her from getting
into it.

Does this make any sense? Can someone shed some light on this problem?

Check to make sure that you are not opening the database in Exclusive mode.
From the Tools menu, select Options, then on the Advanced tab (I've only got
Access 2002, but I think it's the same in Accesss 2003) make sure that the
Shared radio button is selected in the default open mode section.

HTH,

Rob

PS. The number of applications that you have open has absolutely nothing to
do with this.

Access is multiuser out of the box. One or other of you is opening the
database in exclusive mode, perhaps because of a setting in Tools... Options.
