access 2003 database load delay

Hi there,

I tried to find a solution by Googling to no avail.
Here is the challenge:
Windows XP SP2
Office 2003
I loaded a MDB file from Access 2000 and I
guess automatically converted to 2003. No problem.

I access this file from only one PC (the one it is saved on).
This PC is in a LAN of 4 other PC's (router).
No other PC has ever tried to access this file via the LAN,
but the folder containing this file is shared.

For some reason, if I load MS Access first and then
use "File>Open>" and open this file, not only Access
itself, but the MDB loads in less than 4 seconds or so.

But if I double click the MDB file from Windows Explorer,
it takes more than 25 to 30 seconds for a complete load!
As long as I know, MDB is associated with MS Access only.

The file is less than 600 KB, and I even deleted embedded
photo and reduced it to less than 200 KB.

I am at a loss, and would appreciate any help or hint for a
solution.

I have faked my email address. Spammers burn in HELL.
Regards,
Mike

With the database open go to Tools, Options, General tab and turn off Name
AutoCorrect. See if that helps. Might also want to uncheck Compact on Close.

Next I would temporarily disable the virus checker on that computer and see
if that speeds things up. If so, you can set most virus checkers to not scan
for .md* files.

Another thing would be where the mdb file is located on the directory tree.
If it's way down, try moving the file closer to root.

There could also be something going on with Windows Explorer and indexing or
something. Try creating a shortcut to the database file. If that doesn't
help, modify the shortcut to include both the path to Access and the database
file. Actually shortcuts are a good thing anyway especially as you’ll have
this database on a shared drive and it will help the users find it. The
shortcut would look something like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSACCESS.EXE"
"C:\Temps\Junk\Playground.mdb"

It just might be the peer-to-peer network. Having a true server would be a
better, if not more expensive, option.

Thanks
Yes, I do have a shortcut for it. I also used
double clicking to make sure it wasn't the shortcut.

I know for sure it has something to do with the PTP
LAN. Because when I turn the power off to the
router, then the shortcut or double clicking open MDB
in less than 3 seconds or so.
Then I turn the power on, and back to 30 to 40
seconds again.

I just DO NOT know how I can instruct XP not to look
or include LAN in the search and look just in the current
PC.

I have tried everything that I know of, like indexing service
on or off, checking every setting on TweakUI, etc.
I am at a loss.

Thanks again for your reply.
