Access 2000: Database Size Grows Abnormal

Dear All,

I have a 20 MB MDB file (front end) after compacting. I
modify a report and save it, the mdb size becomes around
40 MB. I modifiy another report and save it, the mdb size
becomes around 120 MB.
How to solve this strange behaviour ? I have used Compact
and Repair tools. I also try to create a new database and
import all of the objects.
Besides that, I have another problem. I change the page
setup (margin & paper size) of the report and save the
report. When I reopen that report in design view for the
second time, the margin setup reset to value Top 1, Bottom
1, Left 1, Right 1.
Please share your experience about this matter.

Thanks in advance.

Both problems could be caused by Name AutoCorrect.
Uncheck the boxes under:
Tools | Options | General | Name AutoCorrect
Then compact the database.

If the report has images (graphics) embedded into the report design, the
bloat will continue every time you modify the report.

This was a bug in the original version of Access2000. Be sure you have
the latest service packs installed.

control, so is there no solution to stop the bloat ?
Thanks.

When you begin making changes to a form or report, Access creates a
temporary copy of the object, so you can revert to your saved version if you
mess up.

Any embedded graphic is stored without compression, so it's easy to have a
report that adds 20MB to the size of the database. When you begin editing
this object, the database grows by another 20MB, because Access just made a
copy. Do that with a few reports, and you easily get your 100MB bloat.

Compacting regains the space used by the temp copies.

http://office.microsoft.com/OfficeUpdate/default.aspx

will automatically scan your computer and determine the appropriate
update.

Note that Access2000 is two versions back (current is 2003), and was
one of the buggier versions of the program (not quite as bad as
Access95 but notorious for problems like you are experiencing). You
may well want to consider an upgrade.

Dear Allen,

Your suggestion to uncheck AutoCorrect options is really
helpful. I have tried it and it seems the mdb file is ok
now.
Thank you very much.

Dear John,

Thanks for the url. For Office SR-1a, the site just
provides a small size file and should connect to internet
whilen installing. Where can I download all the files
needed in order to install locally without connecting to
internet ?

Thanks in advance.

You might want to search the Downloads page at Microsoft: click the
"Downloads and Updates" link at support.microsoft.com and search.

If that doesn't help, I believe you can contact Microsoft tech support
and request a CD be mailed to you... but MS seems to be hell-bent on
getting everyone hooked up to broadband internet 24/7, so I am not
certain how much hassle this will be!
