accented letters

hey, can anyone help me? i recently bought the inspiron
5100 notebook. before i just had a normal pc and whenever
i was writing a french essay or something i would just
press alt+(some number) so get accented letters. however,
on my new notebook, because i don't have a keypad, i have
no idea how to do it. thanks for the help!
 
Most laptops have an embedded keypad, read your computer
manual.
You can also use the character map to insert anything,
start/all programs/accessories
