academic version [2003]

From what I've read, it looks like the Academic Version of Visual Studio
2003 has all the features of 2003 Professional. Has anyone found that the
Academic version does not have the features Professional has, such as Full
Menus, Crystal Reports Reporting, and Deployment Tools?

This was a pretty hot topic when Visual Studio .NET 2003 first came out, and
a Microsoft rep. (whose name I don't recall) posted in one of the threads as
follows (paraphrase):

Visual Studio .NET 2003 Academic Edition *is the same as* the Professional
Edition *with two exceptions*:

1. The Academic Edition does not support remote debugging, and

2. The Academic Edition comes with an extra CD "Academic Tools".

I believe the license is also different in that development of commercial
applicaitons on the Academic version is not licensed and I'm sure M'soft put
in some secret code that labels all applicaitons with the version of VB.Net
that created them.

Actually, the retail packaged Visual Studio .NET 2003, Academic Edition
contains no such licensing restrictions. Editions distributed with
textbooks, etc. come with different licensing terms and "coded in"
restrictions. Visual Studio .NET 2003, Academic Edition does not.

You are not permitted to buy the Academic version unless you qualify and you
may not resell it to anyone who does not qualify for the Academic version
pricing. They police eBay looking for this.

Three of these 6 listings are from individuals and none are asking for
qualifying info. The other three are retailers and do ask for qualifying
info..........

Yep -- I was asking for a family member who is a teacher; I recently got the
2005 Pro version. Her school wasn't planning on buying/selling it on Ebay.

However, I did get the question I asked about the features answered.

I have seen listings altered or withdrawn because of this, however eBay is
now so huge it may be that Microsoft has given up trying.
