About the Safely Remove Hardware icon in system tray

Hi gurus,

I don't have any PCMCIA slots in my Windows XP desktop PC, so why do I have
that little tray icon in the bottom right-hand corner next to the clock
which says "Safely Remove Hardware" when I hover the mouse over it??

That icon also appears for USB devices.

If you click it, it will tell you what devices it thinks can be stopped.
