but suddenly I noticed that many of the endnotes were changed
from numbering 1, 2, 3, ... into i, ii, iii, iv,..., which I cannot accept
in my paper.

Do you know how to correct it? How can it jump from one system
to another system? (I use office word 2003 in windows xp. )

worried. :(

For Word 2003, I think you go back to Insert | Reference, Endnote, and you
should see a way to change the Format of the note. Click Close instead of
OK to change the format w/o inserting a new note. If that isn't exact, surf
the menu options around there a bit, the capability definitely exists, I
just don't have that version to give instructions.

To add to what Daiya has said, i, ii, iii has been the default formatting
for endnote reference marks for numerous versions of Word despite the fact
that (a) no one ever wants this format, (b) users have complained
vociferously, and (c) it should be an easy thing to change. You can,
however, change it on your system, by opening Normal.dot and changing the
format there.
