I'm trying to load a downloaded game package...and all I get is a black
screen...then I have to (Ctrl Alt Del) to end it.

People aren't going to be able to help you unless you're more revealing
about what game it is, where you downloaded it from and what your system
specifications are.

Now I know that you are trying to do something with something and it's not
going as you think it should be.

In other words - please provide better details. You are the only one
sittting in front of your screen (in reference to whom you are asking for
assistance) and thus - the only one who can accurately describe your problem
to others.

- What operating system are you running - precisely (version/service pack
level/latest updates)?
- Have you checked for newer hardware driver updates from the manufacturer
of each piece of hardware (particularly video in this case)?
- What "game package" are you attempting to download/install/run - and do
you meet the minimum requirements for the game (hardware-wise and
software-wise)?
- Is there anything in your event log about this issue?
- What troubleshooting steps have you taken on your own?
- Does said game have a forum or FAQ anywhere that might assist you with
this issue?

By the description of your issue and using detuctive reasoning it sounds like
you are attempting to install the package instead of simply
downloading\saving to disk. The black screen is usually the Command line
interface waiting for your input. This is a symptom of an older DOS program.
XP does not have DOS. It is not written on\over DOS and so does not have it.
Some DOS programs may run using the Compatability mode for the .exe but if it
is truly a DOS program then only certain functions may work and you will have
nothing but headaches trying to play the games. Be sure to get any and all
updates for the games package and be sure that it is compatable with XP.
Sorry Shenan but sometimes we must learn to read between the lines and
assist people without all the techie input that you seem to require. Common
sense and gut feeling is a valuable tool, and along with deductive reasoning
maybe all we have. The clue here is the "Black" window. Think of when you get
that and what may trigger it. TTFN.

Actually - the "Black Window" may be what the emulator in question loads
right before it brings itself up. I have used these tools before and this
is what they do many times.

I don't "require" any information.. It would be easier than "reading between
the lines" as you say - for anyone - to solve a problem with all the
information instead of just..

"Hey, I did this and it did that. Help."

Not that this OP only provided that - but the more information you have -
the more likely the end-answer will be the correct one and not just "best
guess".

To explain my use of the word "emulator"..
The OP did repost after I asked the question requesting more information..
