the milkman

running xp home sp1 (w/all security updates loaded).

used cwshredder, spybot s&d, adaware 6.0, hijack this, to restore my
homepage (temporarily).

after several reinfections, used panda activescan to find
"virus:trj/startpage.FH".

went to securiteam.com and downloaded registrar lite which found the hidden
dll which is said to cause the reinfection.

tried to use windows recovery console to rename the hidden dll but cannot
logon due to WRC not recognizing any of my adminstator passwords. I reset
passwords in both windows and safe mode but it seems that the
"administrator" that WRC is looking for is not the same.

any way to bypass or reset this password, or rename/delete the bad dll some
other way ?

try

Start
Run
type
gpedit.msc
click OK

<Group Policy opens>

Navigate in the left hand tree to

Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Windows Settings
Security Settings
Local Policies

In the right hand policy window not the options

Recovery Console: Allow automatic administrative logon

Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy to all drives and all folders

Set both to Enabled

Hope that helps?

error says cannot find gpedit.msc make sure you typed.....etc..

Sorry my fault I missed the XP home bit of your message

I'm not overly familiar with XP Home, usually deal with XP por and
Windows 2000

Does typing

secpol.msc

bring any thing?

If so you can navigate from the Securty Settings onwards

thanks for the help but secpol.msc shows same error

guess "home" doesn't give a guy much to work with -- thanks
