A7V8X-X S/PDIF question?

Hi,

I would like to connect my A7V8x-x s/pdif out port to my MD player but
i am having trouble finding the right cable. The S/pdif out port is
RCA , i was told RCA only transmit analog signal. My md player
line-in port is a mini stereo plug-in, does a RCA to Mini stereo cable
exsist? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Alfred

Check the manual on your MD player carefully. If it has a mini
stereo plug on it, isn't that more likely to be a line level
_analog_ signal ? S/PDIF is a low amplitude digital signal
running at a high frequency - the cable is supposed to be
terminated in a 75 ohm load and use shielded coaxial cable
similar to a video cable.

If your manual mentions that the connector is actually
an S/PDIF input, please post back the model number
and company name for further help. (I mean, a company can
use any kind of connector they want, but you would need
their adapter cable if the connector is non-standard. A mini
stereo plug would not be a good RF quality connector. Cabling
and connector should ideally match a 75 ohm transmission
line. )

There is some tutorial info on S/PDIF here:

1. You can get phono -> mini plug cables, or RCA-> mini plug, I'm using one
at the moment
2. RCA can transmit S/PDIF, along with optical cables etc.
3. The "S/PDIF" on your minidisk is most likely a 3.5mm style *optical* in,
so therefore the S/PDIF out on the soundcard would also have to be optical,
and you would have to use the cable that probably came with the minidisk
player?

OK, based on your observation that it is a mini optical input, maybe
the OP can try here:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=580&template=audio

This thing converts S/PDIF coaxial to TOSlink optical. The accessories
at the bottom of the page, include an RCA to mini-plug copper cable, if
in fact what you need is copper to copper instead. (Make a liar out of
me - someone does ram a 6MHz signal through an audio plug - yikes!)

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/c...?category=580&item=SP-COAX-OPTICAL&type=store

To go from the TOSlink to minidisk optically, you would need the
SP-COAX-OPTICAL plus maybe a cable from here:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=220&template=audio

The item at the top, is a TOSlink full size optical to "miniplug optical",
whatever that is (SP-TMOC-1).

It looks like that website can solve your problem, whatever the
interface happens to be. You had better phone them, to make sure
you have enough bits and pieces to make it work, as it is hard
to be sure what kind of jacks on on the side of that SP-COAX-OPTICAL
thing.

Hi Paul and Phil,

Thanks for the reply. Now i am starting to think the line-in of the MD
player maybe analog..but i will have to find the manual to confirm(this is
an older model Sony MD player that I bought back in 2000). There is a
optical input port on the MD player that maybe i can use, let me check out
all the link you posted. Thanks for your help again.

Hi Alfred

My Aiwa MD player has a mini jack input. This does duty as both ana
loge input Electrical and also optical digital input the MD came with
a lead that has standard TOSlink at one end a plastic mini jack at the
other which has the end of the light pipe in it that makes the optical
input. Your Sony may very well have the same connector.

By definition the SPSIF connectors are digital. You should be able to get
or make an RCA to mini adapter.
