"A7N8X-VM (new) not working. Ideas?"

F

Hey guys,

I suspect the board is DOA, but maybe i missed something?

System is a new build (I have done many). Board will power up, onboard
LED lit green, but no video or beeps (checked speaker connection, even
reversing the connector).

1) Tried the new monitor AND a known working one, so no problem
there.

2) Pulled all peripherals, leaving just processor, fan (both seated
properly) and memory. Nothing.

3) Removed memory, still nothing.

4) Reset the bios, still nothing (and yes, i took the battery out
first).

All jumpers at defaults.

I know integrated GPU is not optimal, but the price is good for
cutomers that don't do gaming, and I've never had any bad A7N266-VM's
before.

This would be the first EVER DOA Asus board for me (snif-snif).

Thanks for any input!!

Craig

System specs-

Raidmax 350w PSU (and case)
Athlon XP 2500 (Barton)
Kingston Value select 512m pc2700
WD 80 gig 7200 w/8m cache
Asus 52x CDRW
Hitatchi v700 17"

Sounds like your power switch on the case to me, check to make sure that
they are connected correctly, if so then check the pdf version and see if it
has the same connections as your board (in case something was wrong in your
version)..
but def sounds like a bad power switch..

If it's not that then i would say the psu could be bad, you hit the power
button power supply isnt within spec so it never cuts on for you to see..
Check the switch first as it's the easier check to do

Tried aother cpu? just to see if that might be the problem?
Any known working cpu would do...

An another topic:-/ Have you used the A7N266-VM mobo before?
I just got one, fitted it up ok, but then made what seems to be a big
mistake of changing the HSF from a V7+ to an Aerocool 7+Lite..
now what Im getting sounds like a siren when I power up the rig:-(
sorta two tone note repeatedly, really sounds like a warning siren..
this is from the onboard sound device, some sort of speaker/buzzer
effort..

So I've gone the route, changed memory in case I inadvertantly
zapped it, changed psu, changed cpu, original was an XP2200+
so tried a 2000+ no sound, no boot, tried an 1800+ and siren
sound again... its driving me bats:-(
Tried with and without Hard drives, floppy, cd rom etc..same
result:-( Siren..

RD

I don't think so, because the fans, cd drive, hard drives all power up
when I kick the switch.

I don't have on on hand, unfortunately, except for my main machine. I
was under the impression that a MB would report a bad CPU with at
least beep codes??

What about fans? Do the PSU and CPU fans start as expected?

I put together a machine based on a A7N8X Deluxe a couple of weeks ago
for a friend, and a few days later it died. The The mobo light would
be on, and the CDROM would flash when switched on, but nothing else,
no beeps, no voice diagnostics. After swapping and removing various
components, it turned out the processor was dead.

Okay, this is a bit diff than "Nothing"..
You said you took it all the way down to processor, fan, and memory..
did it beep?

I should have been more clear on the "power up". All fans work
properly, as does the cd drive, and hard drive.

Hmm, so everything powers up, but no video and no beeps...

The nForce boards do seem to have a habit of doing that. Usually clearing
CMOS helps, or just hitting reset until it decides it does want to power up.

Not always, I had a fair few xp cpu's around after upgrades, if the cpu
is duff, and one of my old ones is I got zilch out of the mobo, no post
no beeps, no video, but fans worked for some reason...even got a
HDD led light up and then go out... why some stuff seems to work
and others not when the cpu is duff I have no idea, and with no
post beeps or video trying to determine whats up is trial and error.

No beep.

Remove all the drives, reset the bios again and try it all without any
drives.. If it just sits there then let it sit, then try to restart it (hold
down power for >3 seconds and retouch) and see what it does.. Lots of
story's about the Nv chipset boards doing this :(

I had a delux version and the drivelights would just hang ON and post would
never complete (no beep) vocal reporter would give no error.. I sent it back
and got a replacement and havent had the problem yet.. but even when doing
anything on the bios of this board it will not restart without me powering
it completly down. To me that's a bad fault but ASUS dont seem to know
about it (what they say) but I would bet tons of problems like this happens
on these boards

good luck

Ok. Will a nforce mb boot to bios without a processor installed?

Doubt it, think there has to be a chip present, even if its duff. or all
you get is some beep code indicating no cpu present. But I've never
actually tried it with no cpu at all..

Well, it seems from other posts that the nforce boards WILL boot
without a processor. Mine will not. I also tried a AGP video card
(substituting the integrated GPU), and still nothing. I am betting on
the board being the culprit, and will RMA it tomorrow. Thanks for all
the help.
